Variety (Owen Gleiberman): “Stephen King’s eight-novel multiverse has been turned into a slice of lean-and-mean metaphysical action pulp, featuring a stylishly stoic Idris Elba and a magnetically evil Matthew McConaughey.”

Ain’t It Cool News (Eric Vespe / Quint): “Instead what we got is a forgettable movie that has no highs and lows. No peaks of inventive action set pieces, no valleys of characterization. It’s just always at the same level, trying to jam as much story at you as possible as it leapfrogs from one scene to the next like without giving a shit about making any of it cinematic. It pays lip service to the source material without actually getting at the core of what makes it special.”

Collider (Matt Goldberg): “The Dark Tower doesn’t even really do us the courtesy of being laughably bad. That would take some level of ambition, which the movie studiously avoids at almost every turn. Instead, it simply exists, eager to be overlooked and forgotten.”

Hollywood Reporter (John DeFore): “[I]n their effort to introduce newcomers to this world, the filmmakers make the saga’s contents look not archetypal but generic and cobbled together.” … “Production and effects departments make the picture quite good-looking, action scenes play well and, though the setups are sometimes inelegant, a few comic moments land nicely. But no scene in this film even approaches the rousing, lump-in-the-throat power of the first Lord of the Rings film, or even of the initial chapter of The Hunger Games.”

IndieWire (Kate Erbland): “The Dark Tower is startlingly low on both energy or any larger sense of magic or a wider world beyond whatever Jake is able to experience.” … “King’s Dark Tower universe is rich with cultural reference points and is always totally unpredictable, but in cutting it down to consolidate its highlights, “The Dark Tower” can’t even shoot the most necessary bullets straight.”

The Dark Tower får dansk premiere 17. august.

Stephen King burde vinde en Oscar for “most difficult writer to translate into screen play”.
